This beautiful rug was made by Baluch tribes in Khorassan, north-east Persia around 1870-1880 and is in near mint condition, bar some minor nibbles on the ends of the flatwoven skirts. The vegetable-dye wool is in full pile throughout and even the skirts are almost intact. I love the compartmentalised field design of Turkmen 'kochak' symbols - a most unusual design element in Baluch work.
